Cleaner Beaches Project

The Cleaner Beaches Project was a scheme that aimed to improve the quality and cleanliness of the beaches on the east side of Ilha de Moçambique. The project involved a week of promotion highlighting the need to find alternative ways of disposing with waste on the island. Projecto Oceano distributed leaflets around the island and was involved in a community debate that took place on the local radio station. Following the promotion, a morning was spent with hundreds of local children collecting rubbish and cleaning the beaches in conjunction with the Municipal Council of Ilha de Moçambique. HIV/Aids Survey and Awareness Programme

The project initiated a programme of awareness and education regarding the risks and necessary precautions concerning the HIV/Aids virus. The survey involved asking participants about their knowledge of the virus, how it is contracted and the best ways to avoid catching it. The survey was combined with a programme of awareness, teaching the residents the facts and the importance of practicing safe sex. The results were published in the January 2011 edition of Voz Jovem.
